The Friday Humanitarian Scan #39 & #40

The CALP director Cate Turton notes “In a refugee camp in Rwanda, one study found that 89% of households reported selling part or all of their food assistance” in her article at The New Humanitarian. Although the geography and crises change, what people prefer as aid do not. Between 80 to 100 per cent of people in need in different countries and crises say they prefer cash assistance, however “cash assistance makes up only about 11% of the funded humanitarian response today“. There is a lot food for thought here – in the form of cash, not in-kind.

Last Friday, the Humanitarian Scan was replaced by a Word Scan. You can see the analysis of 64 leaders’ speeches at UNGA81 on 22 and 23 September. You will see that the interests and priorities of world leaders change a lot depending on their region: READ HERE

For this reason this Friday the Friday Humanitarian Scan covers the past two weeks.

Past two week’s Humanitarian Scan cover 55 articles, 14 sources. What stands out:

→ Yemen: UN condemns an attempted Houthi strike on Riyadh as displacement surges past 130,000
→ DRC: the country’s worst-ever Ebola outbreak has now killed more than 3,900 people
→ Lebanon: UNICEF says one in five children now goes to bed hungry
→ Gaza: a senior FAO official says he was forced out for speaking out about conditions there.
