The Friday Humanitarian Scan #42

This week is a reminder of two important days: Disaster Risk Reduction Day on Tuesday, 13 October and World Food Day today, 16 October.

Last week, Hayata Destek / Support To Life brought community members, academics, municipalities and many others together in İstanbul for an event called Rooted Change: The Dialogue Meeting on Local Climate Action. Drought and unpredictable weather changes affect local communities, their livelihoods, family compositions and their future as young generation leaves villages. You can hear what local communities have to say in this video. We have recently published two reports that might be of interest to you:

According to Action Against Hunger 266 million people now face acute hunger across 47 countries, double the figure of ten years ago.

It is a very meaningful coincidence that this week WFP and Support To Life kicked off the Cash For Food Programme for refugee communities in Türkiye. We will support food security of the most vulnerable refugee families in the earthquake-affected provinces via cash assistance for the next year and increase their awareness on how to access available services such as education, health and livelihoods.

This week’s Friday Humanitarian Scan covers 50 articles from 14 sources

  • Early action: WFP urges innovative approaches and anticipatory action to respond to growing shocks and challenges affecting global food systems,
  • Gaza: UNICEF reports seven children killed and 33+ seriously injured in two weeks, despite the ceasefire,
  • Nepal: fresh flash floods in Gorkha, weeks after catastrophic flooding in the north,
  • AI: the ICRC says states, not the technology, must set limits on AI in warfare.
