This week’s Friday Humanitarian Scan covers the dates between 4 – 10 April 2026 across 67 articles from 7 sources.
While we started to hear that there are peace talks between Iran and the US, the humanitarian consequences this week was troubling with mass casualty airstrikes across Lebanon killed at least 254 people in a single day, overwhelming the health system and triggering a new wave of cross-border displacement, while aid workers on the ground describe a situation of compounding collapse. The conflict’s reach extends well beyond the region: fuel prices in the Philippines have nearly doubled due to the Iran war, and Afghan civilians in Iran are now fleeing both Israeli strikes and Iranian crackdowns simultaneously.
In Sudan, the crisis enters its fourth year with 14 million displaced, funding severely depleted, and over a million refugees in Chad at risk of losing food assistance due to aid cuts that are also reshaping the global aid architecture more broadly, with OECD data confirming a near-quarter drop in Official Development Assistance driven by US funding withdrawals.
The aid funding crisis has a prominent place in this week’s scan: WFP’s future is openly questioned, the Nigeria op-ed challenges the USAID codependency, and the D+C special on Chad asks how humanitarians prioritise when everything is a priority. Elsewhere, the toll on humanitarian workers themselves reaches a grim milestone, over 1,000 killed in three years and the question of children as deliberate targets in armed conflict is confronted head-on.
The development section reflects a sector grappling with transformation: AI’s impact on democracy and Africa’s digital future sit alongside persistent questions on gender justice, nature finance, and the structural constraints blocking pharmaceutical manufacturing on the continent.
